It's getting hot in here!

Now that, sadly, summer is coming to a close, it's a good time to ramp up your insulation efforts. Cold weather is fast approaching, and the fact is, your house probably is not insulated as well as it could be. Here in Pittsburgh, we're no stranger to drafts sneaking into our homes..and high heating bills!

Here are some ways to stay toasty warm this winter, increase the R value in your house and save a little money on your next heating bill:

  • Add batt, loose fill, rigid, or spray foam insulation to open crawl spaces in attics and basements
  • Plug holes and cracks with weatherstripping, caulking and spray foam insulation
  • Replace old windows, especially if they are single paned glass
  • Repair ductwork: fix ducts that are poorly connected or not well insulated
  • Install a "smart" thermostat and make sure it's set to turn the heat down when you're not home
  • Replace your furnace if it's over 20 years old
  • Look for unexpected areas to insulate, like behind electrical outlets and switches
